Anything but complete: On three Southern Song paintings
John Yiu, PhD candidate, The Institute of Fine Arts, New York University
In his talk, John Yiu presented three examples of Southern Song painting "fragments": Chen Rong's "Six Dragons", Xia Gui's handscroll "Twelves Views of Landscape" and the album leaf "Scholar viewing a waterfall" by Ma Yuan. He spoke on how their compromised form distorts our meaning of them. John also discussed the move away from the monumental landscape painting of the Northern Song dynasty, to one that was more introspective in the Southern Song dynasty.
