The Ink Society X AMEF Online Chinese Ink Painting Program 2022
Summary Report
I. Introduction
For more than a thousand years, the ink has been the principal medium for painting and calligraphy in China. It incorporates the moderation of Confucianism and the balance of Taoism. With the support of The Ink Society, Art Mentor Education Foundation (AMEF) had created two online programs for underprivileged students to experience the joy of Chinese ink Painting easily: Program 1 Learning Chinese Ink Painting from YouTube Instructional Video and Program 2 Chinese Ink Painting Zoom Workshop. We are cooperating with the Society of Community Organizations (SOCO) to recruit underprivileged students to participate in. Students are taught to create ink paintings by learning traditional Chinese ink painting techniques under the guidance of professional ink artists. By experiencing the charm of Chinese ink tradition, students could also be able to learn more about traditional Chinese cultures.

Reimagining Chrysanthemums in A Vase
Description:
Students can learn the basic skills of ink painting step by step by watching the youtube tutorial video provided by the professional Hong Kong ink artist. Students are taught to create an ink painting by learning simple traditional Chinese ink painting techniques and brief historical and cultural backgrounds of Chinese ink art history, in order to raise the interest of students towards Chinese culture. At the end of class, students will be received with small gift as encouragement of their completion of the artwork and the course.
Learning Objectives:
- Learn from grandmaster 八大山人 and open up imagination to the piece of work “瓶菊圖”
- Acquire basic techniques of Chinese Art painting (Xie Yi)
- Encourage kids to learn Chinese art under the pandemic

Lesson Reviews:
According to students’ reviews, the teaching video is easy to follow and understand, they are able to complete their painting step by step and accomplished a satisfying outcome, bring them joy and sometime of relief during the pandemic. They can also replay or stop the video according to their own needs.
Overall, we can observe that the theme “Art” or specifically “Chinese Art” is interest evocable and welcomed among young students, that not just all of 170 students participated enthusiastically, the huge viewing number (722 times) of the teaching video on YouTube had also proved that participants might have watched or even participated more than once, while they might have shared and suggested to others as well. YouTube is also a user-friendly online platform that can be easily accessed and shared to other people, while participants can participate with their family and friends anywhere, anytime.
Although young children were not able to have physical or real-time interactions with the teacher or other students, they can still be connected with others by painting the same artwork. This programme is overall a success on supporting that pandemic should not be a reason to terminate learning, education and creativity.

Blossom In The Season
Description:
In addition to the Ink artist's demonstration and student creation, this workshop also includes culturally oriented content, such as explanations of ink painting techniques, and cultural backgrounds. Students can directly interact with our ink artist, to increase their interest in Chinese ink painting. We believe that under this method and the guidance of professional instructors, students can experience the charm of traditional Chinese ink painting more comprehensively.

Lesson Reviews:
Overall, this lesson is suitable for students to understand more about Chinese Art though painting blooms and mother natures with Chinese ink media. By having real time interactions with the teacher, students can ask for help whenever they have difficulties, while teacher can observe students’ needs and so to provide suitable supports anytime. However, under the limited of time, students’ work can be observed not as finished as Program 1 – Learning Chinese Ink Painting from YouTube Instructional Video, that students are expected to practice after lesson with self-discipline.

Wong Yee-ki, Gessena is born and raised in Hong Kong. She received her BA and MFA from the Department of Fine Arts, The Chinese University of Hong Kong. She lives and works in Hong Kong, and takes part in International exhibitions both in Hong Kong and overseas. Her works are popular among private collectors. She believes that “Art” is beauty that surpasses boundaries and definitions, through imagination and creation, the soul of man can be nourished and uplifted.
