Love - one of life's most essential experiences - has been explored in Western art from antiquity to the present day. However, this theme and its appearance in Chinese art, particularly in literati painting, has gone largely unexplored.
Ink painter and art historian Chun-yi Lee discussed his recent research in the talk, “Hidden Symbols of Love in Chinese Painting", which is based on his 2013 publication, "Hidden Meanings of Love and Death in Chinese Painting." He focused on a group of Ming and Qing dynasty paintings, through which artists captured -- and concealed -- the sexual yearning of love within a visual language of metaphor and delicate imagery.
Chun-yi also introduced his works and discussed the hidden meanings in his own art.
