Much of our knowledge and perception of Chan art has been formulated through the filter of Zen art. As a result, people have come to accept specific genres and styles as standard Chan/Zen art. In his talk, Professor Pan presented Chan art by reexamining Chan as a living, organic culture, through how it interacts with the populace and elite classes of Chinese society, and how its changing practices though time affected the multifaceted nature of Chan art.
