Born in Shanghai, Yang Yongliang was trained in traditional Chinese painting at a young age and later developed his artistic language using the technology of computer imaging.
Yang is best known for his photograph works that follow the composition and spirit of classical scroll paintings. Yet on closer examination, the mountains are composed of high-rise buildings and the trees are in fact icons of rapidly developing China: electrical power-line towers and construction cranes. Yang's works explore the tension between nature and a man-made environment; they are also an expression of his relationship with the ink tradition. Yang has explored these themes further in video format, films and installations.
In this engaging and insightful conversation, Yang spoke about his artistic practice and process. As a photography artist, he also shared his views on his relationship with the ink painting tradition.
